The team of scientists from Trinity College Dublin has discovered the underlying cause of brain fog linked with long COVID. They found that patients suffering from long COVID and brain fog have disrupted blood vessels in the brain and a hyperactive immune system. Understanding this cause is important as it will allow for the development of targeted therapies for patients in the future. The study began when recruiting patients who were hospitalized in St James’s Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research findings show new evidence of metabolic and vascular changes in the brain of long COVID patients, which confirm that neurological symptoms are measurable. Further studies examining the molecular events leading to post-viral fatigue and brain fog are needed as similar mechanisms are likely at play across many types of viral infection. This discovery may change the landscape of understanding and treating post-viral neurological conditions.
