The study found that certain risk factors, such as chronic liver disease, hematological malignancies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cerebrovascular disease, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, and the use of corticosteroids or interleukin (IL)-6 inhibitors for COVID-19, were associated with COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) in patients with severe COVID-19. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to identify these risk factors. The study included 27 articles and found that patients with CAPA tended to be older, experienced longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and had a higher all-cause mortality compared to those without CAPA. The investigators concluded that targeted antifungal prophylaxis and adequate screening for CAPA are essential for patients with severe COVID-19.
