Speech-Generating Devices for Communication Skills in Autism

admin

A study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders found that tablet-based speech-generating devices (SGDs) are highly effective in improving communication skills in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study included a meta-analysis of 31 studies involving 84 participants with ASD, primarily boys and men in early and middle childhood. The use of tablet-based SGDs led to moderate to very large improvements in communication skills, including mands, intraverbals, tacts, and vocalizations. The study emphasizes the effectiveness of tablet-based SGDs in improving communication skills in individuals with ASD and calls for more reporting and incorporation of racial and ethnic backgrounds in future interventions.
