A new biological classification system for Parkinson’s disease research

Parkinson’s disease is complex, with some forms caused by genetics and others by environmental factors. A new model called SynNeurGe classifies the disease based on biology rather than clinical diagnosis. This model includes factors such as alpha-synuclein, neurodegeneration, and genetics to identify and classify patients. The focus is on identifying patients before symptoms appear and developing treatments tailored to their unique biology. The new classification is a major shift in thinking and could allow for earlier detection and diagnosis of Parkinson’s. The study was published in The Lancet Neurology, and is seen as a critical step in bringing Parkinson’s research into the 21st century.
