The annual cost of using agency and bank staff to provide healthcare in the NHS across the UK has risen to over £10 billion, according to a report by LaingBuisson. The agency healthcare staffing market value was £5.1 billion in 2022-23, with most of the spending (£4.6 billion) on hospital staff and £500 million on GP locums and temporary staff for independent hospitals. An additional £5.8 billion was spent on bank staff, which is when a trust’s own staff are used to fill shifts. In England, the total spend on non-permanent staffing in 2022-23 was £10.4 billion, with figures on bank staff for the rest of the UK excluded.
