The 2020 Census shows that “Some other race” is the second most common race in America, after white, making up a significant portion of the population. Broad categorization, such as “Asian,” groups different populations with distinct health challenges together, leading to inadequate public health data. The U.S. Office of Management and Budget’s limited racial categories result in nearly 50 million people choosing “some other race,” in the Census. Certain races and ethnicities are obscured, and the current guidelines hinder better data collection and reporting. Data disaggregation offers a solution by breaking down information into smaller, more specific variables, providing more accurate and flexible data for research and policy-making.
