Ophthalmologists were urged to collaborate with the industry to reduce the carbon footprint of medical products at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting. Dr. Emily M. Schehlein emphasized the need for the industry to minimize unnecessary waste and carbon emissions. A survey conducted by EyeSustain in 2023 found that while the industry is interested in streamlining packaging, regulations between countries can be a constraint. Environmental initiatives include the reduction of waste in phaco packs, more environmentally friendly packaging materials, and a shift from paper to electronic instructions for use (IFUs) in IOL packaging. EyeSustain aims to engage with policymakers to catalyze changes for more sustainable practices.
