Advancing technology has led to a decline in traditional handwritten note-taking, with typing on a keyboard becoming the norm. However, a study found that writing by hand may improve brain connectivity compared to typing. Researchers examined brain activity of 36 university students while writing or typing words, and found increased connectivity in different brain regions during writing by hand. This increased connectivity is important for memory and learning. The study suggests that children should be exposed to handwriting activities from an early age to establish optimal brain connectivity for learning. The findings were based on digital pen use, but the researchers believe traditional pen and paper writing would yield similar results. Conversely, repetitive typing was found to be less stimulating for the brain.
