Disrupted Sleep In 30s And 40s Linked To Memory, Thinking Problems In Future: Study

A recent study in the journal Neurology found that disrupted sleep in middle age is connected to cognitive decline in the future. The study followed 526 participants with an average age of 40 for 11 years. Poor sleep quality, rather than quantity, was found to be most important to cognitive health in middle age. Sleep fragmentation, or repetitive short interruptions of sleep, was also associated with cognitive performance. More research is needed to fully understand the relationship between sleep disturbances and cognition at different stages of life, which could potentially lead to new opportunities for preventing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.
