A recent study found that babies born to women infected by COVID-19 during pregnancy are three times more likely to develop respiratory illness. The risk is significantly lower when mothers are vaccinated before getting infected. Uninfected children exposed to the virus during pregnancy have also shown increased reports of respiratory distress. Research published in Nature Communications investigated the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and infants’ respiratory illness in Los Angeles. The study included 221 pregnant women with COVID-19, 151 of whom were unvaccinated before infection. It found that vaccination significantly reduced the risk of respiratory distress in newborns. The study had limitations, such as a small sample size and exclusivity to severe infection cases.
