The Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) conducted a study on digital diabetes management tools and found that they do not provide significant clinical benefits and can increase health spending. The analysis evaluated eight digital tools for type 2 diabetes but found that only Virta’s solution leveraging nutritional ketosis showed promising results. The other tools only achieved small reductions in hemoglobin A1c and did not improve other health factors. PHTI recommended that purchasers require data analysis and transparency, providers understand the effectiveness of the solutions, and innovators create adequate evidence to support adoption. PHTI plans to analyze solutions for virtual physical therapy, blood pressure monitoring, and mental health in the future.
