Who Is Helped by AI Use During Colonoscopy?

Although clinical trials show that AI can increase adenoma detection rates (ADR) during colonoscopy, real-world results vary. Some studies show improvement, while others don’t. AI use in the US and Europe has increased the proportion of patients needing intensive surveillance, leading to increased patient burden and healthcare costs. However, AI has shown potential in maintaining high-quality colonoscopies and improving endoscopist performance in large screening programs. Some concerns have been raised about AI systems, including a potential increase in false-positive signals, distraction, and prolonged procedure times. AI also appears to benefit less experienced endoscopists more than experienced ones, although improvements in algorithms may lead to better accuracy for all users. Overall, the future of AI in colonoscopy remains promising, with ongoing research focusing on lesion characterization and quality improvement.
