Plant-Based Diets Do Not Increase Hip Fracture Risk Among Postmenopausal Women


Long-term adherence to a plant-based diet is not linked to an increased risk of hip fracture in postmenopausal individuals, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study from 1984 to 2014 and found that both healthful and unhealthful plant-based diets were not associated with hip fracture risk over a 30-year period. Higher healthful plant-based diet scores were linked to a lower risk of hip fracture, while higher unhealthful plant-based diet scores were associated with a higher risk. Study limitations include self-reported data and a lack of diversity among participants.
