Wendy Baer, MD, director of psychiatric oncology at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, advises caregivers to understand their diagnosis and treatment plan before talking to children. She suggests choosing a comfortable time and place, asking children what they know, answering questions using age-appropriate language, and reassuring them about safety and routine. It’s important not to overload them with information and to take care of oneself to be present emotionally for children during this difficult time.
