Walker’s interest in cardiology led him to pioneer techniques such as cardiac catheterisation to detect heart abnormalities. He set up the first cardiac catheterisation unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth, Australia, and later became a paediatric cardiologist at the University of Colorado in Denver, US.
