A study in Heart Rhythm O2 found that using an adherent skin barrier drape during cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) procedures led to a significant decrease in hospitalization for CIED infections. The study analyzed data from 14,225 procedures over a 13-year period, with an infection rate of 0.73%. Patients with adherent skin barrier use were younger and had higher PADIT scores. Adherent skin barrier use was associated with a trend towards decreased infections, especially in patients with 3 or more procedures. Further research, including randomized controlled trials, is needed to confirm the benefits of using adherent skin barrier drapes for CIED infections.
