A study published in Nature Medicine found that an excess of Vitamin B3, or Niacin, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers discovered that a metabolite of excess niacin, N1-methyl-4-pyridone-3-carboxamide (4PY), is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The study identified a previously unknown pathway that causes adverse cardiovascular events due to inflammation caused by 4PY. The study suggests the mandatory fortification of foods with niacin should be reconsidered. Some experts caution, advising more evidence is needed to conclude the definitive health effects of niacin. The study does not address the effects of prescription niacin, which have higher concentrations than supplements.
