New study finds no significant association between preterm delivery and autism

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), affects one in 100 children, according to the World Health Organization. However, the specific causes of autism, including whether there is a link between preterm birth and autism, remains controversial. Researchers from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine have presented a new study finding no significant association between preterm birth and autism. The study, which analyzed nearly 115,000 deliveries over 12 years, revealed that factors such as ethnicity, maternal age, and infant’s gender may play a role in the occurrence of autism. The cause of autism appears to result from the simultaneous presence of multiple factors, according to lead author Sapir Ellouk.
