A new diagnostic tool for femoral osteoporosis has been developed by a team of researchers from UPF BCN MedTech unit, companies 3D-Shaper Medical and CETIR Medical Group, and Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. This tool calculates the risk of femoral osteoporosis fracture using 3D images with biomechanical simulations. The tool is more effective and feasible than current methods. The tool complements and improves DXA with statistical methods, allowing the estimation of bone volume mineral density and obtaining three-dimensional images of its shape. This new method has the potential to predict fracture risk for high-risk patients. The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Densitometry in 2024.
