Ecuador’s constitutional court has decriminalized euthanasia, making it the second Latin American country to do so. The decision was made in a case brought by a patient with a progressive neurological disease. Seven out of nine judges voted in favor of the decision, allowing doctors to end the life of a seriously and chronically ill patient at their request without the risk of prosecution. The case was brought by Paola Roldán, who suffers from advanced ALS. Roldán celebrated the verdict, stating that Ecuador is now a more welcoming, freer, and more dignified country.
