A study of nearly 100 million vaccinated individuals across eight countries found a slight increase in the risk of certain adverse health effects linked to COVID-19 vaccination. These effects include myocarditis, pericarditis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. AstraZeneca’s vaccine was linked to a higher risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome and blood clots, while the Moderna vaccine was associated with an increased risk of myocarditis, pericarditis, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. However, the researchers caution that the study only found associations with adverse health effects and does not prove that these issues are caused by the vaccines. They also noted that overall risk–benefit evaluations of vaccination should take the risk associated with infection into account, as there is a higher risk of developing these adverse events following SARS-CoV-2 infection than vaccination. About 70% of the global population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
