City of Hope cures oldest person of blood cancer and achieves HIV remission

City of Hope treated the oldest person to be cured of a blood cancer and achieve remission for HIV after receiving a blood stem cell transplant with a rare genetic mutation. The patient, 68-year-old Paul Edmonds, has lived with HIV for over 31 years and achieved remission for acute myelogenous leukemia and HIV after receiving stem cells with the rare genetic mutation. City of Hope’s expertise in treating older adults with cancer and HIV and the reduced-intensity chemotherapy treatments, as well as the development of stem cells resistant to HIV, contributed to this successful treatment. The success has led to further research for a possible cure for HIV using CAR T cell therapy.
