Red Cross Urges Action Amid Emergency Shortage

The American Red Cross has reported a critical blood shortage in the United States, with donations at an all-time low. This has resulted in a deficit of nearly 7,000 units of blood, impacting hospitals’ ability to meet the demand. This problem is compounded by the upcoming winter weather and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which may further reduce donor turnout. Multiple factors such as remote work, low iron levels, and travel restrictions have contributed to reduced donations. Despite the shortage, only 3% of eligible individuals donate blood each year. To address this critical issue, the organization is urging healthy individuals over the age of 17 to consider donating blood to save lives.
