Patients in rural areas have more advanced kidney cancer at diagnosis and lower survival rates compared to those in urban areas. Researchers found that patients in rural areas had a higher proportion of advanced cancer at diagnosis and were less likely to receive cancer-directed surgery or undergo partial nephrectomy. After matching, the rural cohorts had a significantly increased risk for death and cancer-specific mortality compared with the urban cohort. The study highlights the need for improved access to timely care in rural areas following the emergence of cancer symptoms. The findings are based on an analysis of 179,509 kidney cancer patients from the SEER database.
