Victoria Atkins, the health and social care secretary, has urged BMA officials to come up with a reasonable pay offer for junior doctors in England. Atkins stated that the BMA’s demand for a 35% pay rise is unaffordable for taxpayers and called for the Junior Doctors Committee to show seriousness in negotiating. This comes after a six day strike by junior doctors in England, which is the longest single walkout in NHS history, and a three day strike in December. The Junior Doctors Committee is open to reviewing multi-year deals but is not satisfied with the government’s latest offer of a 3% pay uplift on top of the 8.8% offered last summer.
