The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) in Ireland is conducting a national assessment of enhanced flu vaccines for those aged 65 and older. The current flu vaccine program uses a standard quadrivalent vaccine, but the assessment will determine if enhanced flu vaccines would be more beneficial. The assessment will look at the burden of flu in this age group, as well as the clinical and cost effectiveness and budget impact of using enhanced flu vaccines. HIQA will also consider the wider organizational, ethical, and social issues associated with this change. The final report will be sent to the Health Minister to inform a decision on whether to offer enhanced flu vaccines to the elderly in the future.
