Insurance Doesn’t Always Cover Hearing Aids for Kids

Joyce Shen’s firstborn, Emory, was diagnosed with profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears as an infant. They faced a difficult situation as their insurance did not cover the cost of pediatric hearing aids needed for her to develop age-appropriate language skills. California and 17 other states do not require private insurance plans to cover hearing aids for kids, leading to advocacy efforts in different states to pass legislation to require such coverage. Governor Gavin Newsom of California vetoed a bill that would have required coverage of hearing aids due to potential costs. Grassroots movements have been advocating for pediatric hearing aid coverage at the state level throughout the US.
