Microglia found to play a key role in regulating the body’s response to anesthesia

Microglia, small immune cells in the brain, play a significant role in regulating the body’s response to general anesthesia. The understanding of how different anesthetics block consciousness is still not fully comprehended, but researchers uncovered that microglia impact the effectiveness of anesthesia and regulate brain network activity in a region-specific manner. This discovery was unintentionally observed during other research and confirmed through testing in mice. Looking ahead, researchers aim to further understand microglial cells and the P2Y12 receptor and its relation to neurological disorders. Additionally, they will continue to study how general anesthesia works with the potential to determine new applications and improve patient experience.
