Erythritol Laxative Effect, Lead Levels Concerning


The European Food Safety Authority reevaluated the safety of erythritol, a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener in food products. They found concerns over its laxative effects and set new guidelines for acceptable daily intake. The evaluation investigated erythritol’s manufacturing process, contaminants, and human exposure. The report established an acceptable daily intake of 0.5 g/kg body weight to prevent laxative effects and suggested a conservative limit of around 35 g per day. Lead was the only impurity found in evaluated erythritol, and the report recommended reducing the current maximum lead content. EFSA urged more detailed data from food manufacturers and proposed modifications to EU specifications for erythritol. The report highlights the need for caution regarding erythritol consumption.
