Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University studied pancreatic islet cell loss in people with no previous pancreatic problems. They found that islet cell loss in the elderly is largely due to insulin-producing beta cell loss, which may be linked to age-related diabetes and inform new treatments. The study focused on trends by age and sex and found that women were more likely to show severe islet cell loss. The findings suggest that islet cell loss may be a key factor in senile diabetes and that preventative treatments targeting beta cell loss in the elderly may be effective. This research was supported by a JSPS KAKENHI Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
