Flagging dementia patients for better hospital care

admin

Cedar-Sinai investigators have developed a way to use electronic health records to identify hospitalized patients with dementia. The method, outlined in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, is designed to help care teams provide tailored and targeted interventions for patients with dementia. An algorithm searches for dementia diagnoses and appropriate prescriptions in patients’ health records, alerting hospital staff when a potential case is detected. A research team also developed a training program for nurses and physicians to better understand and respond to patients with dementia, which is currently being expanded. The system and training program will be utilized and expanded further to improve outcomes for vulnerable patients.
