Idaho abortion case may prompt more restrictions in other states

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to consider the legality of Idaho’s abortion law, reinstating its highly restrictive ban in the meantime. This is expected to lead to similar measures in other states, with politicians in Idaho and Texas already asking courts to allow them to jail doctors for providing emergency abortions. The American Civil Liberties Union anticipates extremist politicians in other states attempting the same thing unless the Supreme Court makes clear that federal emergency treatment standards do not include an abortion exemption. The case will have significant impacts, as the ongoing confusion over what constitutes a medical emergency and legally permissible abortion in many of the states has created fear and uncertainty among patients and physicians. Restrictions could be tightened depending on the Supreme Court’s decision, leading to additional concerns about the status and fate of state anti-abortion laws.
