Critics believe that value-based care (VBC) has failed to improve the cost and quality of healthcare, resulting in billions of lost dollars and little to no improvement in quality outcomes. However, proponents argue that transitioning away from the fee-for-service model is necessary due to the unsustainable path of healthcare spending. VBC aims to put patients at the center of care, allow doctors to focus on patient needs, and embrace the discomfort of change. Implementing a VBC model involves compensating providers for services outside of clinic visits, sharing risks and rewards, and addressing the administrative burden on doctors. Despite challenges, the shift towards VBC is seen as an important step in improving the healthcare system.
