Targeted ocular spectroscopy shines new light on retinal health

Researchers have published a study demonstrating the multimodal functionality of targeted ocular fluorescence spectroscopy in the Journal of Biomedical Optics. The study used targeted ocular diffuse reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy methods to analyze specific parts of the eye fundus, highlighting the impact of factors like lipofuscin accumulation, structural changes, blood absorption spectrum, and melanin spectral profile on the optical properties of retinal tissues. The study included both in vitro and in vivo testing and demonstrated the potential for diagnosing and treating eye diseases over time. The technology presented in the study showed a high sensitivity, spectral resolution, and short acquisition speed for retinal biomarker detection.
