The findings of a University of Michigan poll suggest that US adults aged 50-80 believe that Medicare and other health insurance should cover prescription weight-loss drugs that are approved by the FDA. 83% of those polled believe that health insurance should cover these drugs, while 76% believe that Medicare should do the same. However, only 30% of respondents would be willing to pay higher Medicare premiums for coverage. Among those surveyed who are overweight or have diabetes, there is a strong interest in taking prescription weight-loss drugs. Some of the drugs that were noted to have received a lot of public attention include Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro. Although the poll suggested strong public support for coverage, it also highlighted that Medicare does not currently cover weight loss medications. The poll results also indicate that weight-management strategies such as sessions with a registered dietitian, weight-loss surgery, and gym memberships should also be covered by health insurance.
