Three researchers from Johns Hopkins wrote an article in JAMA Surgery urging the medical community to dismiss the belief that many transgender and gender diverse individuals regret gender affirming surgery (GAS). They reported findings from a retrospective look at evidence-based studies and found that less than 1% of TGD people who receive GAS report regret, which is lower than rates of surgical regret among cisgender individuals. They recommend using a specific and comprehensive patient-reported outcome measure, assessing post-GAS regret no earlier than one year following surgery, and incorporating baseline assessments of factors that may influence regret to improve understanding of post-GAS regret.
