Scientists at the University of Lausanne have identified Tcf7+ CD8+ T cells as precursors to stem-like central memory T cells (TCM cells) and have tracked their development in response to viral infection. These T cells are essential to the adaptive immune system and play a critical role in generating long-lasting immunity. The identification of TCM precursor cells represents an important step in understanding the developmental origin of TCM cells and could lead to advancements in vaccine development. The research also sheds light on the transformation of TpCM cells into TCM cells and their role in the immune response. The findings were reported in Science Immunology in December 2023.
