Obesity is more common in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) than those with Kawasaki disease. This association results in more severe presentation, laboratory results, and outcomes of MIS-C, according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open. MIS-C exhibits distinct inflammatory processes, with obesity contributing to worse outcomes. Researchers analyzed data from 42 sites in eight countries and concluded that patients with MIS-C had more severe presentations and worse clinical outcomes than those with Kawasaki disease. E. Ann Yeh, director of the pediatric multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammatory disorders program at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, advised clinicians to exercise greater vigilance for children presenting with obstruction during COVID.
