Coral decline: is sunscreen responsible?

UV filters are found in many household products and are entering the aquatic environment, posing potential harm to coral reefs. There are two types of UV filters: inorganic and organic, with the latter being the focus of recent research. While there is limited evidence to suggest that organic UV filters are causing significant harm to coral reefs, there are critical data gaps and issues with experimental designs that make drawing conclusions difficult. Researchers recommend more studies to assess the environmental risk of organic UV filters and the development of a coral environment risk assessment framework to optimize conservation and management activities.
