Robotic Ankle Helps with Postural Control in Amputees

Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a robotic prosthetic ankle that uses electromyographic sensors to monitor muscle activity in the residual limb of lower limb amputees and assist with maintaining postural control. The testing showed that the robotic ankle helps users maintain their balance and stability by responding to EMG signals and allowing users to return to their instinctive response for maintaining stability. The technology could be a significant improvement in robotic prostheses for lower limb amputees to help them maintain balance and postural control, even in standing still.
