Active transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) has been found to reduce pain intensity in patients with fibromyalgia (FM), according to a study published in BMC Neurology. Previous studies have shown that tDCS can effectively reduce pain intensity in FM patients. An updated meta-analysis of 20 studies and 664 participants found that active tDCS was effective in reducing pain intensity when compared with a sham intervention. Both the primary motor cortex (M1) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) were found to exhibit a significant decrease in pain intensity when stimulated. However, the study also found limitations in the research on tDCS for FM and the lack of generalizability of previous studies.
