Cigarette smoking, including prenatal exposure, has been identified as a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Researchers studied almost half a million adults and found that early-life tobacco exposure significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes, particularly for those with a genetic predisposition. Prenatal exposure to tobacco increases the risk by 22%, while starting smoking in childhood or adolescence also raises the risk. However, adopting a healthy lifestyle as an adult can reduce the risk by 67% to 81%. The study suggests that lifestyle changes can help mitigate the risk of diabetes in high-risk individuals, emphasizing the importance of avoiding tobacco and maintaining a healthy weight, diet, exercise routine, and sleep schedule.
