Outcomes of Hospital-Acquired Infections in Patients With Severe COVID-19

admin

A study published in Chest found that critically ill COVID-19 patients are at increased risk for hospital-acquired infections (HAI), including ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and bloodstream infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The study included 774 patients with severe COVID-19, with 47% developing a total of 759 HAIs, 35% of which were caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Patients with HAIs had higher mortality rates and longer durations of mechanical ventilation, ICU stay, and hospitalization. The researchers emphasize the importance of surveillance and prevention of infectious complications in COVID-19 patients.
