A sharp increase in gonorrhea cases among young women has been reported in 15 European countries in 2022 and 2023, with a smaller increase observed in young men. The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) conducted a study to assess the magnitude of the increase. The study found significant exceedances in reported cases, particularly among women aged 20-24, and identified potential factors contributing to the rise, such as changes in sexual behaviors and difficulty in diagnosing certain strains of the bacteria. The findings emphasize the importance of raising awareness about sexually transmitted infections and promoting safe sexual practices among young people.
