Researchers at MIT have developed a gel called GastroShield that can be sprayed onto surgical sites during endoscopic procedures to prevent delayed bleeding and reinforce tissue integrity. The gel forms a protective layer that lasts for three to seven days, promoting tissue healing post-surgery. This gel is designed to interact with tissue through various interactions and is flexible enough to withstand digestive tract forces. In animal studies, the gel prevented leakages, bleeding, and perforations, without causing adverse effects. The researchers plan to further develop the material for human use, potentially benefiting patients undergoing colonoscopies or those with stomach ulcers or inflammatory conditions.
