Researchers have found that taking 10,000 daily steps can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and early death, even for those with sedentary lifestyles. Data from over 72,000 individuals showed that those who took more steps had lower mortality and cardiovascular event risks. The optimal number of steps per day to counteract high sedentary time was between 9,000 and 10,000 steps, with a 39% decrease in mortality risk and a 21% decrease in CVD risk. While the study cannot establish cause and effect, it provides valuable information for public health messaging and guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behavior.
