Anthony Stumbo’s mother was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 1997, sparking an initiative in Kentucky to increase lung cancer screenings and early detection. The effort has been successful, with Kentucky screening residents at a rate of 10.6%, more than twice the national average. The Kentucky LEADS Collaborative works to decrease the stigma around lung cancer and encourage adults to get screened. Regular screenings improve survival rates for those diagnosed with lung cancer and the Kentucky program has seen an increase in early cancer detections. The program offers screenings to people at high risk of developing lung cancer, particularly those with a history of smoking.
