Cedrick Reginald Martys studied medicine at Sheffield University and worked in the pharmacology department for one year before marrying his wife, Shirley, in 1968. He completed his GP training in Stratford-upon-Avon and returned to the Peak District, where he began a GP partnership in Darley Dale. He also started working on his MD thesis.
