Sage, a journal and publisher, retracted three papers related to abortion issues due to multiple concerns and potential conflict of interest. The retraction implicates a Supreme Court case on the legality of restricting the abortion pill, and draws attention to the influence of advocacy organizations. The lead author of the retracted papers accused Sage of attempting to discredit excellent research, which is at odds with an established abortion narrative. Responses from the authors and an independent reviewer show that Sage’s justifications for the retractions raise concerns about procedural conflics regarding alleged improper peer review and failure to adhere to industry best practices. A professor’s concerns also contributed to the retractions.
