Halfway Through ‘Unwinding,’ Medicaid Enrollment Is Down About 10 Million

Enrollment in Medicaid has fallen by about 9.5 million people since last April due to procedural issues, leaving it on track to cover about 71 million people. The Biden administration underestimated the number of people who would lose coverage, as disenrollments are likely to exceed 17 million, with 70 percent due to procedural reasons. Nationally, the unemployment rate is low, so many people who lose Medicaid coverage can find job-based coverage or afford plans on Obamacare marketplaces. There are big differences between states in terms of disenrollment rates, and there is concern about the steeper drop in Medicaid enrollment among children. The big question is how many of the dropped Medicaid beneficiaries are now uninsured.
